The History

Hotel Imperiale takes its name from the historic Villa Imperiale discovered in Ciglio dei Vagni, where Roman and Hellenistic remains have been found.

The territory, once called ‘Bollita’, has ancient origins linked to the Siritide civilisation. Nova Siri was a fiefdom of the Sandoval de Castro family between the 14th and 16th centuries, to which Diego, the alleged lover of the poet Isabella Morra, belonged. The original centre of the town developed near the sea, in the Marina di Nova Siri area, and served a military purpose.

The name Nova Siris refers to the ancient Greek city of Siris, mentioned by Strabo.

The city’s strategic location now allows visitors to explore important archaeological sites from Magna Graecia.

The Landscape

Along the wide, sandy beaches, you are enveloped by the heady scent of eucalyptus trees, which are characteristic of the area. As you stroll along the avenues, you are surrounded by rosemary, oleander and numerous orchards that provide the tables of Basilicata and beyond with delicious peaches, apricots and citrus fruits. There are also olive groves.
As along the entire Ionian coast, the predominant vegetation is Mediterranean, with low shrubs, mastic trees and sea lilies, providing the ideal habitat for numerous animal species. In fact, it is not uncommon to spot the sea turtle species known as “Caretta caretta”, which is endangered and protected.
The Ionian coastline on which Nova Siri is located becomes more undulating, especially where it meets the Pollino National Park.

Wheat, peppers, potatoes, broad beans, tomatoes, chickpeas, corn and various vegetables are the products of the land that enrich the dishes of Nova Siri.
High-quality meat, delicious cheeses and superb sausages come from cattle, sheep, pigs and goats reared in the area itself, irresistible delicacies for the eyes and the palate.
Don’t miss the fragrant and sweet gems of the undergrowth: wild strawberries, raspberries and blackberries, which are also used to make delicious jams and artisan liqueurs.
Mushrooms, fresh, dried or preserved in oil, and wild asparagus that “populate” the woods of Nova Siri are other delicacies that contribute to the rich tables of Nova Siri.
